The Northern Echo Building

The iconic Northern Echo Building at Sunderland is one of the finest buildings to work from in the County Durham today. Set in the heart of Sunderland’s long established professional district, it now houses the city’s leading solicitors, accountants and professional firms.

Formerly the grand HQ of the River Wear Commissioners, the building received a huge facelift in 2020-2022 and is now set to be a primary business address in central Sunderland for years to come. The Commissioners offers a host of luxury office suites, iconic conferencing facilities, training suites, classrooms and co-working spaces to local businesses.  

Opened in 2022, the building was our first to be designed with Net Zero principles from the outset, and huge investment was made in insulation, air tightness and Grade A efficient heating. Containment was ran for the future installation of hydrogen boilers, and light sensors were fitted throughout the buildings. Permanent sanitiser installations were installed for wellness alongside touchless sensors to all bathroom fixtures and fittings. 

Sunderland is a city back in growth, with the huge Riverside regeneration coming onstream on the former Vaux site and the city receiving significant new investment post-covid from Nissan and Amazon. The new Northern Spire bridge recently opened in 2019 and major infrastructure work has hugely improved transport links in the city.
